How to transform a former harbour into the most creative and sustainable neighbourhood of the city
Amsterdam’s industrial zone is changing, and so is its potential. It started as a ship wharf, the NDSM. Once it was abandoned, artists entered and made it popular. Now, it is a unique mix of housing, offices, retail, and industrial heritage. One former harbour hall now houses the biggest artists’ village in town.
On this NDSM-BSH tour, a Cityloop guide will explain the policies that made this area’s transformation possible, show you the hidden gems, and present you with stunning views over the IJ waterfront.
Welcome to the sunny side of Amsterdam!
Never miss the opportunity hidden in a crisis. To continue building activities during a financial recession, the city government introduced do-it-yourself plots. On tour, you will see some of the most ingenious house designs these pioneers came up with. And many of the designs are also sustainable and circular! Come along and discover the car-free parts, floating houses, green facades, and flexible floor plans throughout the area.
Starting at Amsterdam Central Station, we begin with a ride on the ferry. This gives us a beautiful view over the harbour. We cross the wharf and artists’ village and a host of new housing projects. We finish at the Eye Filmmuseum, with plenty of opportunity for refreshments in the surrounding cafés and restaurants. On this 2-hour tour, you will see the future of the city unfolding!
